Free write: "audience" and "genre"

“Audience” and “genre” are related to each other because without an audience, there is no point in a genre and vice versa. Depending on which audience you are writing for, will influence the genre in which you choose to write in. For example, if you are writing about health and the importance of flu shots for middle school children, you may choose to write in a lively and easy to understand internet web-page, whereas if you were writing about the importance of flu shots to inform adults, you could write a research paper to include more breadth and depth on the concept. Likewise, if you have the genre of writing already picked out, it is likely that the audience has also been chosen from the genre.

  1. I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is no point to genre or audience without the other (this would be a hyperbolic statement). However, you are right that audience will often influence what genre you choose. You provide very good, concrete examples of genres influenced by a specific intended audience. If you were to revise this post, you could provide equally great examples of audiences that could be chosen from a specific genre.
